How to Make Die-Cut Stickers: DIY from Design to Print

Do you want to make stickers that hug the exact shape of a design and look like they're store-bought? Then this guide is for you!

The style of stickers you commonly see on laptops or merch drops are die-cut stickers, and they look like they were made specifically for that design.

Your design can be a logo, a character, or your own artwork; just by adding an outline and giving it a die-cut makes your stickers look clean and professional.

In this DIY guide, learn what die-cut stickers are and how to make them at your home right from design to print.

What Are Die-Cut Stickers?

Understanding what die-cut stickers are and how they differ from other stickers can help make the whole DIY process easier.

A die-cut sticker is a sticker that is cut all the way through, both through the sticker material and its backing paper. This cut follows the outline around the design.

Unlike a kiss-cut sticker, where you only cut the sticker paper and leave the backing untouched, making die-cut stickers at home is actually easier.

Simply put, a die-cut goes through everything, and each sticker comes off the sheet as its own piece.

Materials You'll Need

Printable sticker paper or printable vinyl sticker paper: Both work, but regular sticker paper gives you that classic sticker look. If you want something more durable, waterproof, and tear-resistant, get vinyl sticker paper.

A printer: Inkjet or laser, both work. Just make sure to buy sticker paper that is suitable for your printer.

Scissors and a craft knife: Scissors are great for cutting around simple shapes, but a craft knife gives better control, especially around tight corners.

Cutting mat: A cutting mat not only protects your table surface but also helps keep your blades sharp for a longer time.

Cutting machine (optional): Having a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine can make the whole cutting process a lot easier. Since it's machine cut, you can go with complex designs and make your stickers look store-bought.

Clear self-adhesive laminate sheet (optional): Laminating your stickers is a great way to protect them, and a clear self-adhesive laminate sheet is the easiest way to do it.

Craft scraper or old gift card: It's needed to laminate smoothly and avoid air bubbles.

How to Make DIY Die-Cut Stickers at Home

Step 1: Design Your Artwork

If you're a complete beginner to DIY, go with simple designs. If you're cutting by hand, choosing simple designs and shapes over complex ones becomes even more important.

Whether you want to design your own artwork or use an existing design to make your stickers, the design must have a transparent background, so use PNG or other high-quality formats that allow for it.

Step 2: Add an Offset

Now, it's time to add an offset to your design. An offset is that white (usually) border you see around the sticker's design. This outline is important because it gives you room for cutting errors and also makes the sticker look clean.

Adding an offset is simple; if you're using a cutting machine, open its design software and you'll find the offset option directly in the toolbar.

If you're using Canva, select your design and click Edit. Now select Outline under Shadows and adjust the size, color, and intensity. Avoid white borders unless you have a cutting machine; use a lighter color instead.

Another easy way is by using free online sticker designing tools. Most of them have the option to add an offset with one single click.

An offset of 2 to 3 mm works great for most designs. If the offset is too thin, you might cut into the design itself. If the offset is too thick, then you're missing the whole point of a die-cut sticker.

Step 3: Ready Your Sheet

Next, open any design software and create a canvas the size of your sticker sheet. Most sticker sheets come in A4, but it's better to double-check your sheet's size. Since we arrange all the designs on this canvas, then print and cut, it's important to get the dimensions right.

Upload your design and place it on the canvas. Either duplicate the same design multiple times or upload different designs to fill the sheet. Just make sure to leave enough space between each design so cutting becomes easy later on.

Once you're happy with the layout, export the canvas as a PDF or PDF-Print if using Canva. Any other high-quality format like PNG works too.

Step 4: Print Your Sticker Sheet

If you're using a cutting machine, then upload the layout to the design software, add the registration marks, and then print the sticker sheet.

Load your sticker sheet into the printer, and make sure that you're using the right paper for your printer.

In the print settings, select the correct paper type and print at the highest quality available. To make sure the stickers print the same size you designed them on your canvas, print at 100% or Actual Size.

It's always a good idea to run a test print on plain paper before you commit to a sticker sheet. This way, you can check the colors, size, and everything else before printing on a sticker sheet. Sticker sheets are costlier than plain paper, and printable vinyl is even costlier.

Step 5: Laminate Your Sticker Sheet (Optional)

This step is optional, but laminate your sticker sheet if you want better protection. Wait for the ink to completely dry before you proceed with lamination.

Remove the backing off your clear self-adhesive laminate sheet and place it on the printed sticker sheet. Use an old gift card or a craft scraper to apply lamination smoothly and avoid any air bubbles in the process.

While printable vinyl is naturally tear-resistant and waterproof, adding a layer of lamination can protect the ink and make the sticker even more durable.

Step 6: Die-Cut Your Stickers

This step is what makes your stickers special. Since we're going with die-cut, you must cut through both the sticker material and the backing paper underneath. Simply follow and cut around the offset you've added in Step 2.

Use scissors to cut around simple shapes and a craft knife around tight corners. Keep your blade sharp if you want clean cuts. A dull blade is the most common reason why DIY stickers look rough and uneven.

If you have a cutting machine, then feed the sticker sheet into the machine and select the right settings, whether you're using sticker paper or printable vinyl, and whether you've added a layer of lamination or not.

Run a small test cut to confirm you're cutting through all the layers before cutting the entire sticker sheet.

That's it; your DIY die-cut stickers are now ready.
