DIY Washi Tape without Double Sided Tape | How to Make Washi Tape at Home
Washi tape is a fantastic tool for crafting, but it can be a bit pricey. Luckily, with this simple DIY hack, you can transform a basic roll of masking tape into a variety of vibrant and personalized washi tapes at a fraction of the cost!
Why This Hack Works
Masking tape is already a staple in many craft rooms, and with this method, you can create washi tape that closely mimics the real thing. It tears easily, just like store-bought washi tape, and the best part? You have complete control over the design! Whether you want to use it for gift wrapping, journaling, or any other creative project, this hack allows you to customize your tapes to fit any theme or occasion.
Unlike other methods, this technique doesn’t require sticker paper, a printer, or double-sided tape. Just a few simple supplies and your imagination are all you need.
Supplies You'll Need:
- Masking tape
- Paper
- Plastic tape (such as clear packing tape)
- Scissors
- Watercolors, acrylic paints, markers, pencils, stamps, etc.
Step 1: Setting Up Your Base
For this DIY washi tape, we'll use masking tape as the base. To start, you'll need something to stick the masking tape to so you can decorate it.
Initially, I tried using baking paper, but found that the tape didn’t adhere well. Instead, I now recommend sticking plastic tape onto a sheet of paper as your base. Wider packing tape works well as it provides a larger surface for your masking tape. The color of the plastic tape doesn’t matter, so feel free to use whatever you have on hand.
Alternatively, you can use a thicker sheet of plastic, like acetate, or a laminated surface. Once you’ve prepped your base, stick a few strips of masking tape onto the paper, and you're ready to start decorating!
Step 2: Adding Color with Watercolors and Acrylic Paints
Pretty much any type of paint will work on masking tape, but each has its own effect. Watercolors give the tape a matte finish, though they won’t be waterproof. For a more durable option, try acrylic paints. Keep in mind that a thick layer of acrylic paint may create a streaky effect, so consider watering it down for a smoother look.
Remember, watery paints might cause the tape to warp slightly, but this can be minimized by using as little water as possible.
Step 3: Optional: Add Some Shine
To make your washi tapes pop, consider adding shiny details with metallic acrylic paints. A fun and easy technique is to splatter the paint across the tape for a playful effect. You can also draw simple designs, like random lines, for a more structured look.
Step 4: Use Markers and Pencils for Fine Details
- Colored Pencils:These are great for adding subtle, pale backgrounds to your tape. They also work well on top of paint for added depth.
- Markers:Permanent markers, like Sharpies, are ideal because they are opaque and won’t smudge. Water-based markers can also work, but they require longer drying times, especially on acrylic paint.
You might also want to experiment with stamps for unique patterns, depending on the ink or paint you use.
Step 5: Trimming Your Tape
Once your designs are complete, carefully trim the tape strips. Leave a small edge of plastic at the end of each strip to make peeling the tape easier later on.
Step 6: Storing and Using Your Custom Washi Tape
Your DIY washi tape is now ready to be used! You can tear it or cut it to suit your needs—whether for journaling, gift wrapping, or other creative projects. While this method is best for creating small batches of custom tape, it’s perfect for adding a personal touch to your crafts.
For storage, you can roll up the tapes and secure them with paperclips, or keep them flat in a folder. It’s a fun and satisfying project that will add a special touch to your future creations. Give it a try and see where your creativity takes you!
