TikTok is Back But Americans are Staying on Chinese RedNote

The sudden influx of U.S. users to Xiaohongshu has created an unexpected opportunity for interaction between Chinese and American users on the platform.

“I just want to reassure you that we’re looking for ways to communicate and be respectful to your community,” one American user stated. “We want to be good guests.”

Some American newcomers have urged their fellow users to maintain a respectful atmosphere for Chinese users on the platform.

“Just a quick note for the American users joining us: Please leave politics behind. We want to have fun, enjoy ourselves, and show respect to those who are already here,” another user posted.

Most Chinese users have warmly welcomed the newcomers, with some even providing video tutorials to help the new “TikTok refugees” navigate the app.

“This could be a historic moment,” remarked one Chinese user. “It feels like so much has changed in an instant. Ordinary people from our two countries have never truly connected before... I hope everyone can seize this brief opportunity for meaningful exchanges of ideas.”

The Chinese social media app, which gained popularity in the United States after an influx of TikTok users, has introduced language translation features

While TikTok received a temporary reprieve from being shut down, Americans continued to use and download Xiaohongshu, which surged in popularity last week amid speculation about TikTok's potential closure.

Owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok briefly went offline in the U.S. ahead of a federal law mandating its sale or ban. However, it quickly returned after President-elect Donald J. Trump announced he would issue an executive order to delay the ban once he took office on Monday.

Uncertainty still surrounds TikTok’s future in the United States. In the meantime, Xiaohongshu, often referred to as RedNote, is embracing its newfound fame in the U.S.

Over the weekend, Xiaohongshu introduced a feature allowing users to translate posts and comments between Mandarin and English. By Monday, it had reached the top of Apple’s most downloaded apps list, a position it has maintained for much of the past week.

Data shows that as of Monday, 32.6 million notes were posted with the hashtag “tiktok refugee,” accumulating 2.3 billion views.

American users on the platform expressed their intention to continue posting on RedNote, even with TikTok back online.

“TikTok is back. Will I still continue using this app? Absolutely,” one U.S. user stated. “I am going nowhere.”

Let's open Rednote to welcome our friendly friends from the United States.
