Masking tape is already a staple in many craft rooms, and with this method, you can create washi tape that closely mimics the real thing. It tears easily, just like store-bought washi tape, and the best part? You have complete control over the design! Unlike other methods, this technique doesn’t require sticker paper, a printer, or double-sided tape. Just a few simple supplies and your imagination are all you need.
Supplies You'll Need:

Alternatively, you can use a thicker sheet of plastic, like acetate, or a laminated surface. Once you’ve prepped your base, stick a few strips of masking tape onto the paper, and you're ready to start decorating!
Step 2: Adding Color with Watercolors and Acrylic Paints
Pretty much any type of paint will work on masking tape, but each has its own effect. Watercolors give the tape a matte finish, though they won’t be waterproof. For a more durable option, try acrylic paints. Keep in mind that a thick layer of acrylic paint may create a streaky effect, so consider watering it down for a smoother look.
Remember, watery paints might cause the tape to warp slightly, but this can be minimized by using as little water as possible.
Step 3: Optional: Add Some Shine
To make your washi tapes pop, consider adding shiny details with metallic acrylic paints. A fun and easy technique is to splatter the paint across the tape for a playful effect. You can also draw simple designs, like random lines, for a more structured look.
